What a novelty last night was. I actually managed to be on the winning team in the Holyrood pub quiz!! It would be fair to say that I didn't make a massive contribution to the team except by being the resident Sisters of Mercy expert but it was still good fun. I do feel a bit guilty about ignoring people in the pub though. I can only apologise and say that I have been a little distracted of late. It won't happen again. Sorry.

    DIY frenzy
I am feeling quite pleased with myself since I have just managed to repair my toilet without having to call out a plumber. This was all made possible due to the wonders of PTFE tape. I am resisting the urge to have a plumber look at my bathroom for fear that he/she may laugh for some time and then condemn it. My lack of a sink in the bathroom is becoming a little tiresome however so I suppose I should check my finances and have the whole lot ripped out and replaced. I managed to hang a mirror up in my bedroom without it instantly falling down as well which is another first for me. DIY is definitely not my strong point.

What a busy weekend! Most of the daylight hours spent recovering from the nights though. Friday night saw me drunkenly making up with an old friend of mine after we had fallen out over something rather trivial when looked at in the big scheme of things. My brother was out with us and he very helpfully arbitrated for us and managed to stop us killing each other. Thanks are therefore definitely due to my brother.

Saturday daytime...I think I did some shopping or something. I don't really remember now. Saturday evening spent at Redemption where Screaming Banshee Aircrew were once again excellent. My friend Alex came out and met us which was really good as well. Still, there were once more rather a paltry number of people dancing to Spermwhale and Graeme and myself were amongst their number. We'll learn eventually I suppose. Didn't stay too long after the bands since I was exhausted and a bit drunk.

Sunday daytime mostly spent in bed. I was pretty tired by this point. Went out to Opium for Gillian's birthday. Cheap drink and interesting company made for a good evening. We ended up in DKY where I stayed to the end. Strangely enough I spent most of today in bed also. Now I just have to face the eternal boredom of work tomorrow.

The funeral on Friday wasn't as bad as I had expected although it did go on for a long time (about 5 1/2 hours including the meal afterwards) so it was a bit of a marathon. Didn't much feel like going out on Friday evening so I just stayed in.

Saturday evening saw me in the Holyrood meeting up with fellow players from the 7th Sea LARP. This was quite enjoyable and a couple of my friends who don't come out with me very often turned up as well. I then went off to The Mission where I danced a lot (the music was unusually good) and met some new and interesting people. Sunday involved recovering from Saturday but by the time evening came around I was able to go and meet up with a friend through in Glasgow and had a great time.

Last night I went to a civic reception at the city chambers in honour of the director of my previous workplace. Since I was made redundant from my last job it might seem a slightly strange thing to do but I wanted to catch up with some people that I actually liked although I had no idea who was going to be there so it was a bit of a gamble. As it turned out, four of us managed to get quite drunk on the free wine and then go on to two different pubs afterwards. This was most enjoyable (and I think I was invited to a party but my memory is now slightly hazy). This did lead on to me waking up this morning with a bit of a sore head.

Today I am not at work because I have to attend a family funeral. I am definitely not looking forward to it at all. It looks like it is going to be rather long and drawn out affair. I have to go and put my tie on now (I don't usually wear one) and then get going.

Last night I went out to Adrenaline at Teviot with Alex and another friend of mine, Euan. We stayed till it finished and I danced fairly energetically so I am now (having just got out of my bed) feeling a little bit lacking in energy. Nothing that some irn bru won't sort out though.

Tonight is the Glasgow cam game after which I am meant to be going out with Steve and Alex. I am not entirely sure that I am up to it however but we will see.

I have purchased a cat toy for Steve to replace the one which was broken two weeks ago. Unfortunately I think that this one is less useful for whipping people with.

    More Battletech
Work boring as ever. I agreed at the weekend to play more battletech this evening and, worse yet, to play in the SESWC battletech competition. Every year (for about the past ten years or so) I have said to myself "Next year I am going to say no". I just don't know why I keep playing. My best performance was in 1997 when I came second. Most other years I have just been knocked out in the first round. Maybe next years I'll be able to say the word.

I spent yesterday through in Glasgow playing Battletech with lots of children. Very exciting stuff. I was helping out a friend run a participation game there. I turned down the opportunity to play in a three round tournmament today however in anticipation of not being able to get up in time. I spent most of yesterday evening in bed due to the fact that I was completely shattered after a very late night on Friday and playing hours of Battletech does take its toll. However I managed to get up to go and meet Alex and Barry at The Mission where, much to my surprise, Alex happily danced all night!

The rest of today I intend to spend fiddling with my computer (need to find space for a new hard drive in my case) and doing very little else. I promised someone at work that I wouldn't drink today since she was getting a bit concerned with my consumption so I had best not go near any pubs. I seem to be rambling so I'll just shut up now.

Rather dull day at work although yesterday evening in the Holyrood was quite enjoyable. This evening I am meant to be playing 7th Sea but I find myself lacking in motivation. Other things I could be doing keep popping into my head. I promised that I would play however and I'll probably enjoy it when I get there.

Things could be worse however since when I got back from work today a cheque from the Inland Revenue had arrived which I had completely forgotten was due. It must be the nicest thing I've received in a brown envelope for quite some time.

On a lighter note I came across the opening paragraphs from an as yet unpublished novel that seemed fairly topical. They are reproduced below for your entertainment:

    Apache Riders

    by Jilly bin-al Cooper

It was a hot and steamy night in the Kuwaiti desert. A barrage of coalition Patriot missiles thrust into the virgin arab sky.

Back in Washington, George Bush's finger lovingly caressed the round, shiny, red, erect button. 'Condoleeza' he said. 'All I have to do is push this button to bring the apocalypse to the Middle East'.

A faint sigh escaped the President's National Security Advisor's lips. Before she could speak, a high-pitched whine emanated from the corner of the oval office. It was Tony. 'Can I watch?' he asked.

What a joyous weekend! That is a slight exageration but I went through to Glasgow for a small party at Steve's and nothing particularly untoward happened. No eyebrow shaving, toe sucking or underwear sniffing (not that that ever happened but that is another story...). I did have to put up with another telling of the pot and breadstick story however but I suspect that I might be hearing that for some time to come so I suppose that I had better get used to it. Now I just have to survive another week at work but this will hopefully be made easier by the fun of working on my new website.

    Website idea
Another rather dull day at work has for once produced some inspiration. Although this might seem a little strange I have had for some time now an interest in the rather bizarre names which hairdressers use for their shops. I happened to start discussing this at work and went on to mention that I intend to create a website dedicated to this subject. Although I want my site to stick to actual examples (including pictures where possible) people in my office helpfully started supplying some suggestions. The best suggestion came from Michelle when she came up with "Scissor's Palace". How we laughed. The working name for the website is "Hair Today and Gone Tomorrow".

Well I just about avoided any further arguments today although I did rather snippily tell someone to stop patronizing me. My job is very boring however and it is becoming incresingly difficult to find new and interesting topics of conversation.

The person who sits next to me used to game when he was stil at school but had stopped and not gone near anything roleplaying or wargaming for seventeen years. How fortunate for him that he missed out on the CCG craze. Or so I thought. After a few conversations about some of the games which I play he suddenly develops a massive interest in the Yu Gi Oh card game. Following on shortly from that he is in Games Workshop buying stuff for warhammer!! This is what boredom can drive you to.

Well I certainly know what subject to avoid talking about at work. We had a bit of a discussion about some of the issues around the current situation with Iraq today and it nearly turned into a nasty, bitter argument.

In the past many people have commented on just how argumentative I can be so recently I have been doing my utmost to avoid such situations. I especially don't like the risk of friends falling out with me over what are usually pretty trivial things in the big scheme of things.

The only thing that makes my current job at all tolerable are the people I work with and so therefore I intend to try and avoid talking about the war (or at least disagreeing with people about it).

    8:02 am
Well that was quite a weekend.

I would have posted before now but this is the first time that I've had access to a computer whilst in a vaguely sensible state of mind since Firday night.

Friday started quite well until I met Steve in the Holyrood. I got very drunk and did some very unfortuanate things which I think by now are probably common knowledge amongst the whole of Cam Scotland (if now the world). Anyone who would like an accurate version of the events is welcome to contact me for all the sordid details but to be honest I would very much like to forget the whole thing as quickly as possible.

As predicted I spent Saturday daytime at Conpulsion helping on the bring and buy stall with a hangover. I was also feeling rather sorry for myself after the previous nights antics. I was having difficulty looking one individual in the eyes. Saturday evening saw the much anticipated 7th Sea LARP go really well. Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves and this left me in a considerably beeter frame of mind. I popped down to Gigantor but didn't stay too long since most of the people who had said to me that they were going to go did not and I had stopped drinking at this point anyhow (remembering the night before).

Sunday saw me furnished with a new nick name which probably means that I certainly won't be allowed to forget certain events for some time. We played a most enjoyable game of Junta however and then I had a nice early night to try and recover in time for going to work this morning.

Well it looks like I am probably going to have a hangover tomorrow morning for Compulsion (Edinburgh roleplaying convention). This is about par for the course since I have achieved this feat for two years running now and once again I am helping out my friend Jason run the bring and buy stall. No doubt he will give me a slightly disapproving look when I see him.

I can state with some certainty that I will have a hangover due to the fact that a friend of mine from Glasgow just phoned to let me know that he is coming through for the convention this evening and would I like to meet him. Despite the fact that I am already going to a party this evening I agreed. I do have some difficulty saying no at times. Oh well.
